VIC'S BIG HINTS
===============
Welcome to HINTS and TIPS, this issue we have quite a few useful
tips.
DESKTOPS
========
First thing, we give you the advantages and disadvantages of
replacement desktops to GEM Desktop.
NEODESK
=======
NeoDesk is the best known of the desktop replacements and
certainly has come out on top in many tests and lots of people
use it too.
NeoDesk 3 is on 2 disks, comes with a 127 or so page manual, and
enables you to do lots of things to your desktop , these include:
o Custom icons - you can redesign them, put them into multi
colour and have a different file icon for indeed just about every
different file.
o Icons can be dragged to the desktop, which gives an easier
way of loading them in.
o Icons can be edited by the icon editor, called by a
keypress. You can load RSC gem files and nick the icons and put
them in your desktop.
o All menus have keyboard shortcuts, helping the user speed up
operations drastically.
o Macros can enable the recording of each keypress mouse
movement etc.
o Fewer disk swaps are need in the copying operations.
o A Clipboard sort of ram disk acts as a temporary disk drive.
This is emptied when you run a program enabling more memory to be
freed.
o The text viewer is vastly improved as you can scroll up and
down through a document, a bit like Quick view.
o You can display DEGAS .PI? and .PC? files in gem just by
double clicking on them. NEO files can be displayed in low
resolution.
o NeoDesk uses its own routines for displaying windows and
these are obviously much faster.
o Windows can be halfed and can be copied by clicking on x2
button.
o NeoDesk allows the user to write custom built programs and
accesories to be used with NeoDesk. These can make use of
NeoDesk's special functions, including the recoverable trash can,
coloured icons etc.
o A new control panel, printer spooler, its compatible with
the big screen monitors, works in all resolutions.
o BEST WORKS: It best works with 1 meg as the program takes 30K
up.
GEMINI
======
A PD Desktop, costing less than £2 intially (its sharweware - you
ought to register - you will then get a manual and updates.)
o Gemini enables you to replace the desktop icons with new icons.
o You can drag applications on to the desktop
o Two icon sizes
o Intelligent Command Line Interpreter (Mupfel)
o No icon editing, but you could with WERCS
o Different fonts, courier, t-mail etc.
o AMC Gdos supplied. PD version of GDos.
o Keyboard shortcuts
o Mupfel - 40 commands
o Recoverable trash can, and paper shredder!
o Grumble - Needs 1 meg or hard drive for best uses.
o Only 2.00 or so!
ATARI TOS 2.00

Atari's TT and MEGA STE operating system (see ST World), enables
uses to have the sort of NeoDesk features built in. May be
released for STE users later this year or early 92.

KAOS DESKTOP.
------------
I haven't seen it yet, (ST World), but it is promised to be
better than Gemini and to rival NeoDesk!
Check out South West Software Library or Floppyshop for details.
VERDICT.
-------
At the moment NeoDesk is the best option, although it costs about
£28.00 (cheapest distributor) it has the best features. Gemini is
next at £2.00 and being constantly updated. But I have a feeling
KAOS will top the lot. Who knows (see next issue).
NEXT ISSUE
----------
Hints and Tips will be bigger next issue, with small but useful
tips hopefully that you've found out. Send them in they may help
other STusers.
